Our Winemakers
Since Herzog Wine Cellars began operations in California in 1985, the winery has been shaped by three visionary winemakers.
Peter Stern, Winemaker from 1985–2007
Peter Stern, a California native, was Herzog’s inaugural winemaker. Before joining Herzog, Stern played a pivotal role in revitalizing Israel’s wine industry. In 1982, he was brought on as a consultant by the newly established Golan Heights Winery to design their facility and develop their wine portfolio. He created the winery’s flagship brand, Yarden, along with its iconic oil lamp logo. Stern also recruited protégés from California’s UC Davis to lead various Israeli wineries, helping to spark Israel’s wine boom.
David Herzog, recognizing Stern’s expertise, invited him to helm Herzog Wine Cellars. During his two decades with the winery, Stern established some of Herzog’s most celebrated lines, including Special Reserve and Baron Herzog. Notably, he became the first kosher winemaker to receive scores above 90 in Wine Spectator.
Joe Hurliman, Winemaker from 1998 to 2021
In 1998, Joe Hurliman joined Herzog, eventually succeeding Stern as the second winemaker in 2007. Hurliman, another California native, honed his craft in the Central Coast at Alban Vineyards before working under Stern. He played a crucial role in expanding Herzog’s offerings, including launching his boutique label, Eagle’s Landing.
Hurliman also persuaded the Herzog family to invest in vineyard ownership, starting with their first purchase in California’s Central Valley in 2010. His vision of overseeing every step of production—from farming to bottling—resulted in improved wine quality and cost control. Hurliman’s tenure spanned 25 harvests, leaving an indelible mark on the winery.
David Galzignato, Winemaker from 2021 through today
As Herzog’s current Director of Winemaking, David joined the team for the 2021 harvest. Born and raised in Northern California, Galzignato brings a French-influenced winemaking style shaped by his mentors and training in Italy. His experience at prestigious Napa Valley wineries, such as Duckhorn and Provenance, has instilled a “farming first” philosophy to maximize vineyard potential.
With over 100 wines scoring 90+ points, Galzignato combines his expertise with a focus on crafting high end, boutique wines. His efforts aim to position Herzog Wine Cellars at the pinnacle of high-end winemaking while enhancing the winery’s existing acclaimed lines.
