The Total Package

Creating exceptional wine is just the beginning of the journey. When it’s time to bottle, package, ship, and sell, numerous decisions must be made regarding how the wine will be presented to the world. Typically, a new wine requires a new label, which involves many detailed choices that can significantly impact how the bottle is perceived on a store shelf.

The process starts with naming the wine, followed by designing the label — choosing the right fonts, colors, and details. Should the label be square, rectangular, or perhaps something entirely unique? Should it feature torn edges? And what material will the label be printed on—paper, wood, metal? Descriptions must be crafted, and specific legal information included to comply with regulations that vary from country to country, often requiring different versions of the label based on the market.

While the label is being designed, decisions must also be made regarding the type of bottle to use. You’ve likely noticed that wines come in various shaped and colored bottles. These choices are driven by both function and aesthetics. A cork and capsule must also be selected, and the cork may even feature custom printing.

Ultimately, winemaking is a symphony, where each element—production, packaging, and distribution—acts as its own instrument. If any part falls out of tune or misses a beat, it impacts the entire composition. At Herzog Wine Cellars, one of our primary goals is ensuring that all these components work together in perfect harmony.
